MaternaWatch · v2.0
Initializing Earth Observation Feed
Northern Nigeria · 2026

Every hour,
a Nigerian woman dies
in childbirth.

Most of them can be seen from space — before it's too late.
MaternaWatch fuses Sentinel-1 SAR, Sentinel-2 optical imagery, and ground-truth health data to predict — and prevent — maternal mortality in Africa's deadliest care deserts.

Care Desert Mapping
23.4M women
↑ 1.2M since Jan 2026
Satellite-derived road network and clinic location analysis identifies communities where the nearest functioning maternity facility is more than 2 hours by available transport — the critical mortality threshold.
Sentinel-1 SAR · Flood
Route Disruption Alerts
14 blocked
↑ 6 new · Last 48h
SAR detects flooded roads 24–48 hours ahead of peak inundation. Alerts sent to community health workers with alternate routing — preventing the rainy-season mortality spike.

Anaemia Risk Forecast
7 zones
↑ 3 new · Q2 2026
NDVI crop-stress data predicts food insecurity 3–6 months before clinical anaemia presents in pregnant women. Enables pre-positioning of iron supplements before deficiency becomes life-threatening.

How the Network Works
From satellite signal to bedside · 4 steps
01
EO signal triggers

Sentinel-1 SAR detects a flooded road. Sentinel-2 sees a clinic offline. Or a CHW reports a high-risk pregnancy. The system identifies the catchment area at risk.

Latency: < 2h from satellite pass
02
Nearest midwife matched

The platform looks at GPS pings from all enrolled midwives, filters for availability and scope (basic vs. emergency obstetric care), and ranks the best match by travel time — not straight-line distance.

Match time: under 60 seconds
03
Dispatch on phone

The midwife gets an SMS and an app notification with patient location, alt-route map if floods are present, and the woman's known clinical history if she's in the system. They confirm with one tap.

Works on any Android · USSD fallback
04
Transport assist + tracking

If the midwife needs transport (motorbike, boat, NURTW partner driver), the platform calls a pre-approved vehicle. Patient family gets ETA updates. Outcome logged for the model.

Onboarding a Midwife · 14-day Process
Designed to be the lowest-friction enrollment in the country
Day 1
Apply

Midwife or CHW submits via USSD code, WhatsApp form, or in-person at any State MoH office. Requires: NMCN registration number or community health practitioner license. No registration fee.

Day 2-3
Verification

License auto-verified against NMCN registry. Local State MoH confirms practice area. Photo ID submitted via phone camera. Background check via Civil Defense partnership.

Day 4-10
Refresher Training

5-day online + 2-day practical refresher on emergency obstetric protocols, PPH management, partograph use, and platform dispatch app. Delivered free, certified by Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria.

Day 11-13
Kit Issued

Mobile delivery kit (UNFPA-spec): sterile gloves, partograph, basic PPH meds, BP cuff, fetal Doppler, headlamp, smartphone (if needed), solar charger. Re-supplied quarterly.

Day 14
Live on Network

GPS enabled. First dispatch eligible. Pays ₦18,000-32,000 per month base stipend depending on LGA risk tier + ₦4,500 per attended birth. Direct bank transfer, weekly.

Tools That Get Them There Faster
Every part of the workflow has been re-engineered around realistic conditions
Tool · Dispatch App
One-Tap Accept
Lightweight Android app (12MB). Works offline; syncs when signal returns. USSD fallback for feature phones. The midwife sees patient location, alt routes if floods are detected, and one button: Accept.
Tool · Transport Hailing
Built-in Ride
The midwife taps "I need transport" — platform calls a vetted motorbike (or boat in riverine LGAs) from a pre-paid pool. NURTW partnership covers fare. Family never pays.
Tool · Tertiary Referral
Escalation Loop
If the midwife identifies a complication beyond her scope, one tap escalates to the nearest CEmONC facility. NEMA helicopter dispatch is available for 9 designated obstetric emergencies.

DEPLOYING
Bring the Network to a New State
Active partners · Onboarding next 6 states

State MoH onboarding takes 8 weeks.

We work with State Ministries of Health, traditional birth attendants where appropriate, NMCN-registered midwives, NURTW transport unions, NEMA, and tertiary referral centres. There is no commercial fee to the state. Funding comes from UNFPA, the Gates Foundation, and the Federal Basic Health Care Provision Fund.

If you represent a State MoH, NGO, or donor — request a partnership briefing below.
